xx Neopets: The Darkest Faerie
« Thread started on: Aug 16th, 2005, 11:41am »

Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment America
Developer: Idol Minds

You're cast as the duo of Roberta and Tor, and you can swap one character out for the other by pressing L1 and R1 at the same time. Roberta's a magic user that attacks with a wand, while Tor is a wolf in shining armor that attacks with a sword. Both characters can equip pickup items called motes to alter the properties of their offense and defense. These motes essentially imbue your items with different magic, and some magic works better (or worse) against specific foes. This means that you can equip Tor's sword with fire magic or give Roberta's robe a water affinity. The skeletons we blasted in the demo didn't seem to respond any differently to our elementally equipped attacks, though.

The Darkest Faerie seems like it will be a game about going on quests. The quest we tried had us investigating a crypt in search of a prince's family history so that he could prove to his fiancée's parents that he was of a royal bloodline. There's a quest log that you can use to keep track of what your current task is, and a map screen makes finding your way around pretty easy.

Graphically, Neopets has a clean and colorful look to it that gives the game a good sense of personality. The controls are very approachable, and you're given extremely easy access to your stock of motes and healing items using submenus that are accessed using the D pad.

With the popularity of Neopets continuing to soar, it seems likely that The Darkest Faerie will be a hit when it's released later this year, but regardless of its own popular lineage, the game feels good and looks smooth and may very well be appealing to players who may have never seen a Neopets product before.

After watching a 12 minute movie that involved a staff member on Gamespot interviewing the director of this game, complete with clips of this game, I can say this:

This is going to be the best game I have ever played on the PS2! grin

  • Evil villain poisoning the earth and ACTUALLY SEEING CIVILIANS TURN EVIL? Check.
  • A dozen bosses? Check.
  • Excellent voice acting? Check.
  • Engaging combat akin to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time mixed in with Dark Cloud? Check.
  • No loading times whatsoever and seamless gameplay? Check.
  • Giant worlds in which you can explore in? Check.
  • All the characters from the site looking exactly as they should here? Check!
  • ABLE TO TRAVEL TO FAERIELAND TO SEE FYORA!? CHECK!!!

Thank you, oh holiness that is Idol Minds.

I like neopets (have an account at the website), and I'm sure this will be a good game. Especially with what it has to offer. ^^

Even if I'm not in to Neopets as much as I used to be, this does sound pretty good. So atleast I know something about Neopets before I buy the game. cheesy

My main reason for squeeing like a mad woman and saving the pennies for this game is this:

One of the main characters is an Acara (last I heard). If Vira and Eliv Thade are in it, I will be absolutely ecstatic. I also like how platformy it seems to be, the RPG and platform mix we see in Kingdom Hearts is how this looks like it will be done. So, yay.

My neopets addiction will go through the roof because of this game. Gee, thanks PS2. It's like online crack, and now crack on my TV screen, too.

You say... an acara is a main character? They're one of my favourite neopets too (though I like Zafaras better). I bet it'll be Princess Fernypoo or someone like that. ^^

The Acara is a new character, and is a sorceress. (Not an evil one, thankfully.) And the other main character it Tor the Lupe knight. grin

Oh...

Isn't it strange that a majority of Acara, Zafara and Kau characters happen to be female? o.o

It goes the other way. The majority of Lupe, Gelert, Draik, Techo, and Nimmo characters are male.
I cannot find one example of a female Nimmo in any plot. Or anything on the site for that matter. I bet they're all guarding the tadpoles.

I'm not really a neopetter but I guess the game doesn't look half bad. I'd get it but I just spent my money on Shadow Legacy. Personally I believe I didn't waist it. I'll start saving up again. It looks cool.

ART FOR THE DARKEST FAERIE!

Note: You need javascript in order to see the images. Might be wise to turn off adblockers.

I say, this game looks rather sweet.
As the darkness/taint spreads, the locals and the worlds are corrupted. MERIDELL GETS TAINTED! POTENTIAL EVIL SKARL! EEEE! (The tainted Draik looks so evilly hynotized. =D)

And there's the Tax Beast, long overlooked villain of Neopets. Awesome.

Also, from the looks of it, Sophie the Witch is a main character in this, since she has about three cards to herself. Eyries, Nimmos, Bruces, Blumaroos, Ixis, Draiks, and Gelerts are prevalent.
