Ever since I first played Spyro the Dragon I've wanted to make a fanfic. But dangit when I try it comes out total hogwash. I guess my biggest problem is I have no fresh ideas. When I go to ff.net it seems everything has been done before. I mean..everything sensable.

I have my own fancharacter. But I'm afraid to use her or else get branded with the dreaded mary sue. Jezuz, sometimes I think a fancharacter will be a mary sue regardless of how much effort you put to not make them one. Because your character has to have SOME interesting qualities and also be related to cannon in such a away that they fit in.

I mean seriously the absolute non mary sue character has to be really boring. Every fan character has a tiny hint of mary sueism in them. Its almost unavoidable!

Well, you gotta inspect some facts about a female character. (Male characters too, but, well... yeah. Gary-Stus are uncommon as all hell.)

First: Does she fall in love with Spyro or is in love with him reasonlessly at the beginning of the story, and the topic isn't elaborated on with respect to other characters who love/loved Spyro (that's Ember and Elora for those who don't know). Ember, of course, would be affected less, because she has Bandit now, but if it's set pre-SSL... yeah. Elora, of course... you GOTTA include her! VU's ignored her enough, the fans have to keep her character alive.

Also... Well, does she have any powers that are more spectacular than those of Spyro's universe? Flame breath for dragons is normal, but if she's Elora and Spyro's daughter, she can't be some sort of super draun. She can't be more powerful than Elora with kicking and breathe fire as well as or better than Spyro... not by a long shot, especially being YOUNGER than both.

And hey, some idiots'll say that all fancharacters are Sues. I know there are quite a few fancharacters that screamed "SUE!" for me less than Ember did when I first saw her.

I guess I haven't been paying attention. I had no proof that Elora was in love with Spyro in the games. I never played a game beyond Year of the Dragon so I only heard of Ember through screenshots and fanart.

I mean sure Elora wanted to hang out with Spryo but does that translate into love? No it dosen't.

And another thing. If Ember is in the game itself how can she be translated as a MarySue? Thats not possible.

Personally I wouldn't worry about the other fan-ideas. If your own stories are original in respect to the games themselves, just go ahead. That's what I'd do. (Although I don't frequent the Spyro fanfiction section, but I'm just saying)

Whether your character is a Mary-Sue or not is up to you. It sounds like you understand characters pretty well so I wouldn't be worried about it if I were you. TTE is right, some people brand all fan-characters as Mary-Sues.

You mean you thought only fan-characters could be Sues? It's entirely possible for a real franchise to come close to a Sue, particularly if they're not sure about what they're doing.
Ember wasn't in the game enough to really be called a Mary-Sue (we don't know if she's totally perfect) but she's a classic 'love-interest' type of dragon (and I therefore hate her). She's pink, girly, covered with hearts, and throws herself at Spyro - just about everything associated with the generic 'male hero's love interest'. I don't think your own character can do much worse that that. wink
