We all know what it is. That one evil thing you stumble upon when you choose to look at a story that seems to be a good read. Then, it happens. You almost never see it coming. That one character that haunts all fandoms. That thing that is clearly the writer's own onmipotent ego. That chartacter that attracts all members of the opposite sex, can save the day without breaking a sweat, and can still find time to angst over stuff.

Yes. It is the Mary Sue.

The scary thing, is that most Sue writers refuse to see their Sue as anything but a well-developed canon character.

We must do all we can to wipe it out.

Does anyone know of any helpful links for all fanfic writers?

I've got a few:

The following are very good, but somewhat "witchy" in terms of comments, links.
(Warning: Both livejournal links. Some stuff they mention in both links may be unsuitable for people under the age of 14.)
Deleterius, slayer of Harry Potter and LoTR sues. (But they help with any other sues)
Pottersues
Funny misspellings in bad fanfiction.

Hope this helps.

Hey TP, do you know a site where you can do a test where you can see if your charicter is a Mary Sue?

You could always take a Litmus Test. They're pretty long and divulge deep into the fabric of your character's makeup, and also reveals a little about yourself and the connection you have to your character. (It did for me. ^^) Because I'm not sure about the correct format and the way to answer it, I would as TP. She has a few links to them on her site, if her page is up yet...

I tried taking a Litmus Test for Zoloe. And I was a little confused about it. If anyone could explain it it a little more detail about the scoring and such, I would be very appreciative. ^_^

I've determined that Akiro and Sabina aren't sues either! cheesy

You know, I haven't seen that many Spyro Sues on ff.net. Then again, I could have just had the luck of not clicking on that story and reading it.

I took the Mary Sue poll test for Zayna and Nazrindi, (my dinosaur RP characters) and they both turned out to be non-Sues. grin

Heh. I'm not entirely sure about my characters...I've been scolded by my readers for calling my characters Sues/Stus. However, I still wonder...

Anyway, in all honesty, I don't believe that litmus tests tell you much about your characters. Every one of them is different, and so on some, my characters are called Sues, other's they're borderline, and on some more, they're non-Sues. *shrug* Then again, maybe I'm just a lousy Sue-author.

I tend to make flaws in my characters at some point or another - the idea of making a character who is better than a canon character isn't worth it.

I try to do that too. I personally think that my characters are better-developped than the average Mary Sue, but then, Mary Sue authors always think the same of their charactes. However, my fancharacters aren't intended to be stronger than the cannon characters. They're supposed to be equal...maybe even a bit weaker than the cannons. Also, I try to give them distinct flaws, not the subtle, obscure imperfections of most Sues. Besides, writing their imperfections can be really fun. ^_^

This is a nice little site which has some interesting articles on fanfics. There's all sorts of things from opinions and definition articles, so hopefully something will prove to be useful. If not, it's still fun to read it.
